The Whole Cast of the Canopy
Gorillas and chimps get the headlines, but the forests of Uganda and Rwanda are bursting with other primates: golden monkeys flashing through bamboo, colobus drifting between branches, and the calls of a dozen species echoing through the trees. These encounters are easy to add, easy on the legs, and full of character.
Quick facts: Uganda & Rwanda · Half-day or shorter · Easy to moderate · Great add-on to any trip
A primate safari doesn’t end with the great apes. This region is one of the richest places on Earth for primates of every kind, and many of them are a delight to track in their own right. Whether you have a spare morning or want to build a trip around primate diversity, we’ll match you to the right experiences.
The Encounters
Golden Monkeys
The star of the show. These striking, endangered monkeys live in the bamboo forests of the Virunga volcanoes, and watching a troop feed and play is pure joy. Golden monkey tracking is available in Mgahinga (Uganda) and Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda), and a longer habituation experience can be arranged for those who want more time.
Colobus & Forest Monkeys
Across Kibale, Bwindi and beyond, you’ll find black-and-white colobus with their flowing capes, lively red colobus, red-tailed and blue monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, the handsome L’Hoest’s monkey, and troops of olive baboons. A guided forest walk often turns up several species in a single morning.
After Dark
The forest doesn’t sleep. On a guided night walk you can spot nocturnal primates such as bushbabies and pottos, their eyes shining in the torchlight. A magical, lesser-known add-on.

How to Add To Your Trip
These experiences shine as part of a larger safari. A golden monkey trek pairs beautifully with gorillas in Mgahinga or Rwanda; forest monkey walks slot naturally alongside chimps in Kibale. Permit fees vary by activity and change periodically. Just tell us what appeals, and we’ll build it in.
