Uganda’s smallest national park is also one of its most magical. Tucked into the corner where Uganda, Rwanda and the DRC meet, Mgahinga sits among three dramatic volcanoes and offers something rare: gorillas, golden monkeys and high-altitude hiking, all in one peaceful, uncrowded place.
If Bwindi is grand and busy, Mgahinga is intimate and quiet. Fewer travelers, sweeping volcano scenery, and the chance to combine two primate encounters in a single short stay make it a favourite for those who like the road less travelled.
Mgahinga is home to a habituated mountain gorilla family, as well as troops of endangered golden monkeys, with a golden monkey habituation experience available for a longer encounter. Because gorillas roam freely across the Virunga borders, we’ll always confirm current tracking conditions when you plan.
Accommodation centres on the nearby town of Kisoro and the park’s edge, ranging from cosy guesthouses and mid-range lodges to a handful of more comfortable retreats with volcano views. We’ll match you to the right base.
Mgahinga lies near Kisoro in Uganda’s far southwest, around a nine to ten hour drive from Kampala, or a short flight to the Kisoro airstrip followed by a brief transfer. It also pairs naturally with Bwindi, which is relatively close by.
Year-round, with the drier months giving the best footing for both tracking and volcano hikes.
